Formed earlier this year and after their successful debut release ‘Trust and Promises’ back in June Fat Dads are back with another classic summertime tune. ‘Taking our Sweet Time’ released August 20th 2022.
Fat Dads (none are fat and none are dads by the way) hail from Carlisle, the Wirral and Kirkcudbright. Influenced by The Strokes, Sports Team and RATS they have a sound harking back to the garage/indie scene of the noughties, with their catchy indie infused tunes. Fat Dads are Tyee Wright (Vocals), Steven Dixon (Guitar), Mike Smith (Guitar), Alex Whittaker (Bass) and Andy Graham (Drums).
Already gaining airplay on Radio X with John Kennedy taking our sweet time is another classic summertime song, filled with glorious jangly guitars right from the intro with a melody that hooks you. It’s got a real uplifting feel to it. Think Mungo Jerry’s Summertime brought forward to the present…it has that kind of feel in my opinion
“Classic summertime song”
The verse kicks in “Shall we go to the city baby, lets f**K around just me and you” and is overlaid with undulating guitar hooks and riffs that add depth to the rhythmic melody, all held together with a solid chunky bass and pulsating drum pattern. It follows Trust and promises in that it is catchy, clean and fun.
“Undulating guitar hooks and riffs”
The chorus wins it for me, I love it, it will have you singing along in no time, and probably have you humming it all day, there seems to be a trend forming with the music Fat Dads put out. Easy to listen to, great catchy tunes and simple fun lyrics…what else do you need.
There’s a cool spoken vocal complete with a (I assume) Kirkcudbright accent, “Jumping in the car at the mere mention of the sun” and with references to ice cream at Allonby complete with F****n sprinkles. It’s a fun song.
“A real earworm of a chorus”
All in all, Fat Dads have pulled out another fantastic song, simple, fun, melodic and a real earworm of a chorus. After their first song I thought yeah, these lads will do it and this track just reinforces that thought. You can tell in the writing and the music that they enjoy what they do, and they do it well. Although still early days they are off to a banging start, with two great summer tunes in the bag the future is bright for this band. I for one am looking forward to what else they have to offer and are definitely on my to see list.
The Fat Dads will be supporting The Holy Coves at the Brickyard on September 22nd 2022.
