Formed in 2015 Danish Indie rockers Mansfield consist of Christian Stage (Lead Vocals), Mathias Havelund (Guitar), Mathias Wedeken (Bass) and Filip Gulløv (Drums). From Copenhagen they signed a record deal with Indie label DME in 2019 and in 2020 they released their debut album ‘Star Crossed Lovers’. Upon release their single ‘A Place in the Sun’ quickly became a hit on Danish national radio and ‘Star-Crossed Lovers’ has received critical acclaim in Denmark with a number of UK radio stations picking up on their sound which is described as more British than Scandinavian.
The band has received praise from British producer Paul Schroeder, producer of The Stone Roses and The Verve, and John Hassall from the British rock band The Libertines, who both live in Denmark.
The sound of British guitar rock is close to the band members’ hearts and came naturally to lead singer Christian Stage. In his youth, he lived in Dublin, Ireland as well as in the North of England where he travelled around performing in bars and at youth clubs and schools. He noticed how the audience responded in a positive way to his direct and catchy songs, and continued to build and develop his song writing from there.
After releasing ‘Chasing after You’ in September, Mansfield are back with their second single ‘The Sky’s in Love with You’ it is the second and final single before Mansfield’s forthcoming EP ‘Come Rain or Shine’ due for release February 3rd, 2023. It pays homage to the mysterious wonder of love.
“A groove laden drum”
You are instantly hit with a groove laden drum that brings back memories of early Northern brit pop/rock fused with a 60’s beat. Its upbeat, anthemic and very catchy. A blend of distorted guitars, mellotrons and strings fill the soundscape with a psychedelic tapestry of colour.
“A psychedelic tapestry of colour.”
The vocal is fantastic, its crisp, clear and reminds me of Mark Morris (Bluetones) in its tonality also hints of the Charlatans within the instrumental. Can’t complain at that can we? Its pure brit-pop/rock with a Merseybeat backdrop. This track has a coolness and a swagger and the lyrics give an added dimension making it almost visual.
“An anthemic track”
The drum beat carries the song forward with an uplifting chorus where the vocals soar. This is an anthemic track and will please old and (like me) new listeners alike. Admittedly this band are new to my ears but I like the vibe, its good old indie rock. I have to say I am really impressed by this band and I am sure that they could take the UK music scene by storm. Bring on the EP as its sure to be a hit over here.
