Jonny Ash Band are four lads from Wrexham, the band consists of Callum Gaughran – the enigmatic frontman and what a voice, his brother Dan Gaughran responsible for thunderous bass lines, Pete Roberts on Lead guitar and Mike Jones in charge of the pummelling drum beats that get you going. Need I say more…oh yes there is much more.
Formed in 2021, they have release four singles so far with another due on the 7th October. Their debut single ‘We Are The People’ was followed with ‘Boys With Black Eyes’ and ‘Disco’. Their last single ‘Rosies’ an ode to a local nightspot was released back in June 2022.
These tracks have earned them recognition and radio play throughout the UK, including BBC Wales, BBC 6, XS Manchester and Amazing Radio. Although they have only been around a short time they have worked alongside Shaun Ryder, The Sherlocks, This Feeling and Scruff of the Neck. Our sound music added them to their hotlist and they were awarded single of the week for ‘We are the people’.
Their latest release, This Town pays homage to their home town of Wrexham and, as with all their tracks is instantly relatable, it could be any town or City. It’s a love letter, of being proud of where you come from despite the issues and the darker side of life yet highlighting the upsides. Its an observation of life, a social commentary if you like. It also showcases their talents, stripping the heavier, driven guitar sounds and bringing to the fore a more pop orientated side to their music.
“Instantly relatable”
A deep bass line gets things going before a melodic, rhythmic clean guitar strums and chimes under a catchy drum beat. It has a really upbeat feel. The vocal is just brilliant, clean crisp and clear, setting the scene with an added accent, I think this makes the whole thing even more relevant. You know they are talking about their town. It rattles and rolls along at a really good pace, intermittent stomping drums and chiming melodic riffs and solos.
“A catchy drum beat”
Lyrically its honest and to the point, nothing is hidden, portraying the subject matter in a way that well, to be honest doesn’t sound particularly appealing to some yet the way it is delivered you get a sense of pride and belonging. With references to miserable girls, boarded up windows, council tax rate rises along with hating the police, it could be anywhere. Like I said its an honest reflection of today’s society.
“Chiming melodic riffs”
When the chorus kicks in, the atmosphere changes, its about pride and loving where you come from, not having it any other way. “This town we call our own, this town will always be my home, I don’t care what was said, I’ll be here till I’m dead” It gives the song a lift and creates a more upbeat, hopeful vibe. Then to ensure you know what they are saying the question “You’re not from round here are ya son, just in case you were ever in doubt, This Town is what I’m on about” Brilliant.
“Its anthemic”
Furthermore, its anthemic, not in the way that some songs are where driven guitars give an anthemic feel, it’s in the fantastic vocal and the passion as the song builds, these lads are a proud of their roots and should be proud of this track.
