A little over two years ago Manchester based Little Strange released their last single ‘Loving Only Gets You Down’  a self-proclaimed ode to T-Rex, this was just three weeks before the pandemic hit. Since the band and indeed the world has undergone considerable change. No longer a six piece, after saying goodbye to founder member Jamie Platt and drummer Lewis Moran, the band now consists of Jamie Thompson (Vocals), Olly Davis (Guitar/Harmonica/Backing Vocals), Jake Caveney (Guitar), Jack Clynes (Bass), and Charlie Harris (Drums).

This restructure has added fuel to the fire for the band, who’ve carefully bided their time before getting back into the saddle. Reuniting with long-time producer, Adam Gorman (The Travelling Band), of Pinhole Sound Studios. Little Strange are quickly making up for lost time.

After headlining the Yuck Magazine-curated Another Fine Festival, the band joined indie heroes The Coral & Everything Everything on the main-stage at Coast Roads Festival and having supported the likes of Working Mens Club , Automatic, Neon Waltz and The Howlers, Little Strange have amassed a cult-like following of their own. Several headline shows across North West have drawn in receptive crowds of all ages, including a notable in-store performance for Fred Perry Subculture in Leeds.

Their latest release ‘Before’ was mainly cut as a live take to retain as much energy as possible and according to Jamie “Intended to be a ‘rollercoaster of adolescence’, the lyrics will resonate with many, particularly those who are yet to shut the door on the golden era of ‘Indie Sleaze’”

A rousing drum beat backed with a rich chiming melodic guitar intro set the tone for this rousing track, it has a real groove. Guitars shine throughout. There is a glam rock feel to it, yet I also get hints of Black rebel Motorcycle Club, (in my opinion) this gives a heady mix of tones and sounds that are sure to please, tambourines give an added shimmer to the track.

“A heady mix of tones and sounds”

The vocal has an almost yearning emotion delivered with style, its smooth yet it has a grittiness too. I do like the sound, almost bluesy but modern. All this builds to a powerful energetic chorus. What makes it though is the inclusion of a harmonica, combined with the almost sleazy guitar riffs it gives a further blues edge. It works perfectly.

“Yearning emotion delivered with style”

This is the first track I have heard from this band, and have to say it got me hooked from the start, the whole feel, and vibe emanating through the speakers had me reaching for the repeat button. Its powerful, strong, emotive and emphasises the finesse Little Strange have. Having listened to their other tracks you cant pigeonhole this band, they simply do their thing, and they make it their own and for me that has to be admired.
