Warrington based Rockers The Twenty Two are back with their latest single ‘Kiss Goodbye’ their fourth to date. Hot on the heels of ‘You’re Mine Divine’ The Twenty two stick to their guns when producing songs, loud, brash, anthemic and, in their own words “Slightly too high to sing comfortably”

Having interviewed the band for our Waxing Lyrical features and previously reviewing their last track I was pleased to be approached to review their latest offering another release inspired by the sights and sounds of student life in a Big City.  According to singer/lyricist Joe Rhodes “Kiss Goodbye is a snapshot of a messy night fuelled by emotional consumption. Like when things aren’t going well with your relationship so your mates decide to take you out. You end up feeling invincible but a little damaged and vulnerable at the same time.

The song was written during lockdown, when everyone was pent up, irritable, its how they imagined that first night would sound…a roar! And roar it does, right from the opening pounding drum intro and thrash of guitar complete with pick scrape we head off into town. One thing I like about the twenty two is the melodic hooks and riffs that intertwine with the raw, overdriven rhythm guitars and backed up with deep resonating bass lines. It’s a rich sound, on point and very catchy.

“Opening pounding drum intro”

The vocal has a uniqueness about it, its high, its powerful and like their previous tracks gives it an added lift and lightens the mood although the opening lyrics don’t suggest that at all “Sick down my trainers, cigarette smoke, its clouding my judgement, and I feel a joke” Yep been there. I get subtle hints of ‘Heroes’ by Bowie in there but like I said its subtle.

“The vocal adds emotion”

Kiss goodbye is packed with energy, the drum and basslines really drive this song forward, its anecdotal, descriptive and you get the feel that you are out on the town with them and as stated “We don’t wanna go home” The vocal adds emotion, its honest, relatable and is delivered with passion and attitude. Lead riffs pulse and shimmer throughout with added grunt from the driven rhythm. It’s a rollercoaster of emotion and sound. I love it!

“Lead riffs pulse and shimmer”

The Twenty Two are fast becoming a band that needs to be heard, each track surpasses the previous and that’s a mark of quality. It won’t be long before these lads are picked up. Their sound is immense, its driven, anthemic, melodic and packs a vocal punch that hits hard. Another great release.
