Midlands based Smokin Eskimoare a 3-piece originals band, combining a blend of blues & rock styles, they cater for a wide range of listeners. Their lyrical content covers many aspects of modern life; from deep thoughts of the universe to taking a drive through the Countryside. These are complimented well by a solid backline and memorable, somewhat exciting riffs to get you on your feet.
The band are heavily influenced by 60’s psychedelic rock and blues, 90’s Britpop with a smattering of jazz and funk. This gives Smokin Eskimo a multi-genre sound that doesn’t allow them to fall into one specific genre.
Smokin Eskimo released their 4th single ‘English Meadow’ on 22nd July 2022 following on from ‘Magic Bill’ released in December 2021. Other releases include ‘Nature’ and ‘Dynamite’ Since then, the band have been focussed on gigging around the Midlands and as far afield as Sheffield, Whitchurch and Aberystwyth.
Recorded at Foel studio in Welshpool back in May with Mike Bew, backing vocals by Brogan Jay were recently added and mastered by Andy Mattox in July.
The first thing that strikes me is a really cool bluesy vibe, an almost Hendrix like riff introduces you to the vocal, its more 60’s than 90’s, more Stones than Roses. It is a total summer song, I find listening to it that it does take you to an English meadow somewhere, a total chill out tune, makes you want to just sit back and enjoy the sun.
“More Stones than Roses”
Its dreamy, the vocals really take you there, “Its such a feeling, to the feel the sun on your skin in an English Meadow” What more can you ask for. Its clean, there’s a subtlety in the vocal, no harshness, smooth. Underneath that the cool bluesy guitar carries it along with just the right bass tones to compliment the vibe.
“Cool bluesy guitar”
Smokin eskimo have a real cool vibe with this song, and I have to say their previous releases, with a range in sound from the Doors to Hendrix to the Stones and The kinks all put together to create a fantastic sound, I thoroughly recommend it. Its refreshing to hear a band that isn’t scared adopt a more 60’s style with their tracks, I mean the 60’s put British music on the map at the end of the day. You get a sense of the Britpop tag but their songs and lyrics are inspired by modern life.
Chris, Jim and Jake are continuing to play out the Summer with more gigs and festival appearances and intend to get back to the Studio in October to record more tracks…Bring it on I say.
