Residing in the small village of Cayton, near Scarborough, Nalgo Bay are an alternative rock duo. Featuring vocalists Terri-Ann Prendergast & Harry Bullen the band take their musical influence from Snow Patrol, & Florence and The Machine with a bit of Arctic Monkeys thrown in for good measure. Using life’s observations and their travelling experiences as inspiration, a penchant for the odd cheeky lyric and that classic Northern sense of humour adds flavour to their songs.
Their first release ‘Riot Town’ was quickly followed by ‘Amsterdam’ earned support from Jericho Keys at BBC Introducing and airplay at Amazing Radio. Nalgo Bay were also added to ‘This Feelings’ Best new bands playlist.
Intense vocal performances coupled with sheer energy and driving guitar rhythms, their songs emit passion with a raw sound…and there’s only two of them! This band love to gig, and are often seen onstage with just a bass, guitar with drums, here’s the trick, they both use drum pedals, Harry on kick with Terri on snare…so lots of jigging about, surely this can only add to the energy of their live performances.
“Sheer energy and driving guitar rhythms”
Recent collaborations with Young Thugs Studio in York see’s Nalgo release their latest summer banger ‘Taxi’ on August 5th 2022. Starting with a soulful yet slightly humorous opening line delightfully delivered in a slight Northern Accent “Oh, where’s my mango chutney in the curry house at 5am” stamps their local roots and personality all over the song from the get go, I found myself listening for more of my hometown dialect as the song progressed.
“A soulful yet slightly humorous opening line”
Its about nights out, good and bad when you see yourself trying to get home, trying to be sober but probably failing, it’s a relatable story. Everything flows, simplicity yet there is an intrinsic complexity too, vocal harmonies drive the chorus, backed with classic Britpop tones from the guitar riffs and melodies, the vocals soar, Terri Anne’s vocal is mesmerising almost hypnotic, a fantastic range in a variety of genres.
“Terri Anne’s vocal is mesmerising almost hypnotic”
From almost delicate soulful tones to really powerful energetic rock. It is packed with feeling, emotion and energy, layered harmonies give it an infectious edge, add to this that northern sense of humour. References to “Losing your mind cos your 99’s got no flake” and “Losing your shit over fish and chips” It’s a riveting listen and a sure-fire summer banger of a tune. Their best one yet in my humble opinion.
