.

On May 14th, Paul Weller releases his 16th solo album since his self-titled debut in 1992, which comes in just under twelve months following June 2020’s magnificent, chart-topping ‘On Sunset’. It’s not hyperbole to state that this new album, titled ‘Fat Pop (Volume 1)’, is among his most compelling collections. It’s an absolute scorcher.

.

During spring last year, after his tour dates were postponed, Paul Weller needed something else to focus on. With many ideas for new songs stored on his phone, Paul started to record them on his own with just vocals, piano and guitar which he’d send to his core band members (drummer Ben Gordelier, Steve Cradock on guitar and bassist Andy Crofts) to add their parts. Despite it being strange not being together, it kept the wheels rolling and sanity prevailing. The band reconvened at Weller’s Black Barn studio in Surrey when restrictions were lifted to finish the work with the shape of the album becoming clear to all.

.

‘Fat Pop (Volume 1)’ Paul adding the ‘Volume 1’ to keep options open for a second volume in the future, is a diverse selection of sounds, no one style dominates. There’s the synth-heavy, future-wave strut of ‘Cosmic Fringes’, the stately balladeering of ‘Still Glides The Stream’ (co-written with Steve Cradock), the chunky percussive groove of ‘Moving Canvas’ (a tribute to Iggy Pop no less), and the kind of dramatic immediate pop symphonies on ‘Failed’, ‘True’ and ‘Shades of Blue’ with which eller has hooked in generation after generation of devotee.

Copenhagen’s Iceage announce their fifth album, Seek Shelter, out May 7th on Mexican Summer.

.

Enrolling Sonic Boom (Pete Kember of Spacemen 3) to produce the record and an additional guitarist in the form of Casper Morilla Fernandez, ‘Seek Shelter’ sees Iceage’s propulsive momentum pushing them in new, expansive, ecstatic directions. A decade on from their first record, Iceage continue to harness their lives together through music.

RELEASES

26/02 – Maxïmo Park release new album ‘Nature Always Wins’

Maxïmo Park who are Paul Smith, Duncan Lloyd and Tom English have always shown so much compassion for life in all of their albums, almost documenting their feelings throughout the songs that they write.

.

The New album shows no sign in diverting from doing that, exploring the joys and challenges of parenthood, as well as feelings of self-doubt and exploring yourself in an ever changing society of the world we live, also the acceptance of aging. This album certainly has a feeling of familiarity to the listeners.

.

The album has certainly come with fresh challenges such as a departure and the challenge of writting and recording over two continents. Despite the departure of band member Lukas Wooler, this album was always in the pipeline. Reflecting on the powers of modern technology, Smith explains that ten years ago this album would not have been possible in a global pandemic, especially with guest performances such as Pauline Murray on ‘Ardour‘. Changes were made such as Tom English playing the drums behind a screen and playing on livestream to the producer Ben Allen. Recently recruited keyboardist Jemma Freese also recorded from her home and had bounce files over.

19/02 – The Reytons release ‘May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You’ EP

The Sheffield band The Reytons‘ attitude comes storming into the room with their fast paced and ferocious style with lyrics that hold some familiarity with us all.

.

The videos are also becoming eagerly awaited and something to look forward to as much as the music, with the previous video for ‘Red Smoke’ featuring Neil Fitzmaurice (phoenix nights/ Brassic) The video also released today for latest single ‘Broke Boys Cartel’ features Steve Huison (Lomper, the full monty).

.

The band have a great observation of relationships in today’s society, as punchy guitar riffs and gruff vocals combine that with the bands energy it’s undoubtedly a mix that will have your eyes and ears peeled for more. it’s hard not to compare them to early Artic Monkeys and Milburn, however this is no way taking away the uniqueness that this band hold.
